By Northern Dancer out of Sex Appeal, Northern Prancer was the “weak sister” from a mating that also produced Champions El Gran Senor and Try My Best, Northern Guest (Champion Sire in South Africa), classic sire Compliance, and graded stakes producers Golden Oriole and Bella Senora. Foaled the year before El Gran Senor – the most outstanding of the siblings – Northern Prancer never ran. She did produce four winners from ten starters, but neither she, nor any of her daughters succeeded in producing a black-type winner. However, for Pedigree Consultants clients, working with mares descending from Northern Prancer has proved to be the equivalent of mining a rich seam.

We must admit, we did a double-take when we saw the pedigree line for the Malibu Stakes (G1) winner, M One Rifle, as the name of his sire, One Man Army, rang absolutely no bells whatsoever. It turns out that we weren’t having a senior moment, as One Man Army has very much been flying under the radar.

On the weekend Evita Argentina has reminded us yet again about this international combination. Watch for more and better bred Storm Cat line mares to visit Candy Ride who moved to Lane’s End this coming 2010 breeding season.

Just last week we noted the victory of Apapane in the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), the most important contest for two-year-old females in Japan. Apapane (TrueNicks rated A++) is by Kingmambo’s son, King Kamehameha, and that stallion completed a notable double, when just a week after Apapane’s triumph, his son Rose Kingdom maintained his unbeaten run with a win in the Asahi Hai Futurity (gr. I). click here to read more….
