With Super Saturday looming, it was a quieter weekend for stakes competition in North America, but there were still some performances, and some pedigrees, worth noting. At Woodbine, Pulpit, who has enjoyed a tremendous September was represented by his fourth graded stakes winner of the month when Aurora Lights defeated a contentious Selene Stakes (gr. III) field to claim her first stakes win.

Despite it being only a week before the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (gr. I), there was some major action in Europe this weekend. The weekend’s big winner was Montjeu, who emerged with a group one winner, two juvenile group winning colts who like Derby prospects, and a filly who just missed in a group race. click here to read more….

We’ve mention before that Spanish-based Dario Hinojosa (who races and breeds under the Darpat banner) has been one of the most successful people we have know in terms of turning pedigree theory into practical achievement. Over the last few years, from a relatively small number of horses, he has bred or raced such as graded stakes winners Pharatta, Ronda, Istan (a son of Ronda), Andujar (who was purchased for the equivalent of around $31,000 as a yearling), and grade one placed stakes winner Alozaina (who was purchased for the equivalent of just over $15,000 as a yearling). click here to read more….

- King's Best really refining down to what he likes – Sadler's Wells mares and more Sadler's Wells. Understandable given Galileo is a relative #
- AWZAAN A GOOD ONE FOR ALHAARTH: http://bit.ly/ivXPN #
- Big Brown to shuttle to Australia in 2010? #
- Vale El Prado. An atypical son of Sadler's Wells who broke the mould. #
- Fu Peg has done very well with Seattle Slew line mares, especially AP Indy mares, so it was unsurprising to see Roman Ruler's first SW. #
- Litt and Solis Racing Venture picked up the half sister to Annihilation for a mere $30,000. Nice filly. #
- Of the high priced stallions at Keeneland only Dynaformer, Distorted Humor and Unbridled's Song emerged relatively unscathed. #
- John Berry has written an interesting article on Three Chimneys stallion War Chant. http://ping.fm/rJl4X #
- Indiana Stallion Hap is the latest to join TrueNicks http://ping.fm/iBfxv #
- Congrats to Pedigree Consultants client Let's Go Stable on buying a glorious Candy Ride colt for $630,000. A++ TrueNicks and a top colt. #

We were intrigued by the pedigree of Lemon Pepper who captured the Alberta Oaks at Northlands Park on Saturday. The filly is the first stakes winner from the first crop of her sire, Fisher Pond, and is also the first stakes winner out of a mare by Lemon Drop Kid.
What makes this so interesting is that Fisher Pond is a son of A.P. Indy, and that horse’s dam, Weekend Surprise, is a three-parts-sister to Charming Lassie, the dam of Lemon Drop Kid. Inbreeding to Lassie Dear (the granddam of A.P. Indy and Lemon Drop Kid) is also in the pedigrees of Champion Stevie Wonderboy, and grade one winner Jay Peg, so we’d expect to see the the A.P. Indy/Lemon Drop Kid combination pay further dividends. Incidentally, this mating has a second clever connection, as Fisher Pond is out of a mare by Alydar, and Lemon Drop Kid is by a son of Mr. Prospector, a genetic relative to Alydar, effectively making Fisher Pond and Lemon Drop Kid reverse crosses.
