SUCCESS AND A SECOND

Alan Porter

The most recent weekend brought client success on several fronts. In Florida, First Passage (TrueNicks A) – the result of a Pedigree Consultants mating plan – gained a first graded stakes triumph in the Azalea Stakes (gr. III). First Passage is now a winner of four of five U.S. starts, and has captured stakes on each of her last three outings.

A daughter of Giant’s Causeway, First Passage is out of stakes winner Win’s Fair Lady (by Dehere), a sister to millionaire and Florida sire Graeme Hall, and a half-sister to grade one winner Harmony Lodge. Incidentally, Graeme Hall and Harmony Lodge both campaigned in the colours of Pedigree Consultants client, Eugene Melnyk. Mares by Dehere have had considerable success when bred to sons of Storm Cat (Maritime Passion won well in Canada this weekend also) and it seems that the combination of a Windfield’s Farm Northern Dancer line stallion (Storm Bird and Deputy Minister – or more specifically Vice Regent) and a Secretariat mare is having a positive influence. This is stakes winner number 5 bred on the cross by our count and we are sure that there will be many more.

Over the years, Pedigree Consultants have claimed or purchased numerous inexpensive mares on behalf of clients that have gone on to become successful producers. One example is Canadian Flagship, a $3,500 claim who was acquired specifically to visit City Zip. She duly visited City Zip in each of her first three seasons, and all three of her foals by the horse are winners. The first, the filly Vasa, gained black-type with thirds in the Dearly Precious Stakes and Oxford Scholar Stakes. The third, Canadian Ballet, has done even better, with three stakes wins. The most recent of these came in the Lottsa Talc Stakes at Belmont Park on July 11, and took her earnings to over $286,000. Canadian Ballet’s sire, City Zip, had a second weekend stakes winner with Get Serious taking the Battlefield Stakes at Monmouth, as well as Zip Quick, who took second in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship (gr. III).

Slightly more expensive – she was acquired after being claimed for $7,500 – was the mare Tizgal, who was sourced specifically for the court of New York sire, Hook and Ladder. Her first foal, Hot Minute, made his debut in a maiden at Belmont on Saturday, and tallied by 4½ lengths. Two other notable Hook and Ladder runners, first and second crop stakes winners Spanky Fischbein and Lookin At Her, were also out of mares acquired very inexpensively (a total of less than $25,000) by Pedigree Consultants for client Chestertown Stud. Right now in America there is terrific value in the claiming ranks as the breeding season is over and it is a while until the broodmare sales are on at the end of the year so if you are interested in picking a filly up on the track do let us know.

On Sunday, and on the other side of the Atlantic, in the Irish Oaks (gr. I), Pedigree Consultants matings were represented by a pair of runners, both for the Abergwaun Farms of Neil Jones. Second favourite Beauty O’Gwaun, winner of the Blue Wind Stake (gr. III) last time out, couldn’t handle the testing ground and was eased, but stable-companion Roses For The Lady (by Sadler’s Wells) earned a game second to overwhelming winner Sariska, after making most of the running. Incidentally, Roses For The Lady and Beauty O’Gwaun have a family connection, as Roses For the Lady is out of Beauty O’Gwaun’s stakes winning three-parts-sister Head in the Clouds.
