A couple of years ago we sold the stallion prospect Jaguar on the Run, a son of Storm Cat to Haras Barlovento in Peru with the owner Coolmore Stud staying in the horse for a small percentage. The deal was put together by Pedigree Consultants and Michael Burns, a bloodstock agent and journalist who covers the South American racing scene very well for the Thoroughbred Times and other publications.
We have just heard from Michael that the progeny of Jaguar on the Run proved very popular at Friday’s Haras Barlovento, Haras El Catorce and Haras Azahares sale of two-year-olds in Lima, Peru. A filly from the first crop of the stallion, a half-brother to seven-time Chilean champion sire Hussonet (now at Arrowfield Stud in Australia)-set a sale record with a final bid of US$75,000. Purchased by former Alianza Lima soccer club President Alfonso De Souza Ferreira, the unnamed bay out of Flame (Per) (Farallon P.) is a half-sister to champion and 2006 G1 Carlos Pellegrini runner-up Shuaily (Per) (in a bizarre coincidence this mare is now in Australia in foal to Starcraft, who stands at Arrowfield). Her unbeaten half-brother Precursor (Per) (Spend One Dolar) will likely earn champion two-year-old dirt male honors following his three-length victory in the June 7 G3 Clasico Luis Olaechea Du Bois, Peru’s lone group event for juvenile colts on that surface. An unnamed bay colt by Jaguar on the Run out of Polish Actress (GB) (Polish Precedent) went to Stud Bahia Blanca for US$45,000 to sell for the second-highest price of the evening.
South American farms have always found ‘diamonds in the rough’ by taking pedigree over race performance and hopefully for Boris Schwarztman and Haras Barlovento this continues to be the case.
