One of the hazards of writing reviews of pedigrees of major winners is that you are constantly open to charges of “being wise after the event.” However, quite a lot of our work – admittedly mostly unpublished – involves being able to extrapolate trends and predict what might work both commercially and from a pedigree standpoint in advance of events.

Scarcely a weekend goes by without sons of Danehill striking all over the world – they had stakes winners in Europe, the U.S. and Australia over the latest weekend – but they don’t often match the achievement of Danehill Dancer, who had the first three home in the Phoenix Stakes (gr. I) for two-year-olds at six furlongs.
The winner, Alfred Nobel, has an unusual pedigree, as he is out of a mare by Desert Prince (by Green Desert, by Danzig, also the sire of Danehill). The Danehill/Green Desert version of Danzig/Danzig has a stakes production record, only a little better than opportunity, but has produced seven stakes winners, two group/grade one. There is actually a little more going on here: Danehill Dancer is by a son of Danzig out of a mare by Sharpen Up (by Atan), and Alfred Nobel’s dam, Glinting Desert is by a grandson of Danzig out of a mare by Warning (by Known Fact, who is out of a half-sister to Atan). click here to read more….

Back in the winter, in one of our most popular features, a review of under-valued stallions , we had this to say about Malibu Moon-
“We’re mentioning Malibu Moon here, not so much because he’s undervalued at his 2009 fee of $40,000, but because we wanted draw attention to how easy it is to overlook that he’s still mostly working off very inexpensively sired crops. His first four crops were sired very cheaply in Maryland, and his first Kentucky crop – now three-year-old – were from a season at $10,000, and include graded winners Raw Silk and By the Light. His fourth crop, now two, were sired at $30,000. From that group he so far has 22 juvenile winners, and four stakes winners, including graded winner Sara Louise, and he still has another 80 foals of 2006 that are yet to run. His next two crops were sired at $30,000 and $40,000. “ click here to read more….

Two sons of Carson City are among the freshman sires recently represented by their first stakes winners. Pollard’s Vision was represented by Vertical Vision who captured the Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes. Pollard’s Vision, who is currently fifth on the Leading Freshman Sire table has now been represented by five winners, and they also include Air Crew, who took second in the Premio Giuseppe de Montel, and third in the Premio Primi Passi (gr. III). This is a pretty promising start for Pollard’s Vision (who stands at Wintergreen Stallion Station, Midway, Kentucky), as he was a somewhat untypical Carson City. Although he broke his maiden at Saratoga, and was third in the Huntington Stakes at two, he did much better at three and fourth, when he captured four graded stakes, securing his most valuable triumph in the Illinois Derby (gr. II). click here to read more….

Just a day after it was announced that Candy Ride would make the short van ride from Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms to Lane’s End, the young stallion underscored his status with a Saturday graded stakes double. The filly, Evita Argentina – who took the A Gleam Handicap (gr. II) – was already a graded stakes winner this year and last, but the Swaps Stakes (gr. II) was a maiden black-type score for Candy Ride’s son, Misremembered. click here to read more….
