  • Laura Ross has put together an e-book on all the new NA sires for 2009. It can be downloaded from http://www.ironmaidensthoroughbreds.com/ #
  • Pretty happy that the Breeders’ Cup Marathon has been extended in distance. Now if they would just get the JC Gold Cup back up to 1 1/2miles #
  • Tale of the Cat should win the Golden Slipper with Real Saga by so far it will be silly. How he lost the Blue Diamond is beyond me. #fb #
  • Sons of Storm Cat over Unbridled Song mares proving a potent mix. Hold Me Back follows Etched, Alpha Kitten and Meal Penalty. A+ Truenick #
  • Red Ransom is defying his age with Portillo and Romneya last week and Typhoon Tracy this week in Australia, his now permanent home. #
  • Allez Wonder just won the Keith Nolan Classic in Australia. Yet another Redoute’s Choice stakes winner out of a Sir Tristram line mare! #
  • John Sadler (the American trainer, not the Aussie one – although they are both good trainers) is having a lot of luck with New Zealand breds #
  • Good effort by Peintre Celebre with back to back Hong Kong Derby winners. One of the few sons of Nureyev whose progeny handle the conditions #

GOLDEN SILCA DIES

Alan Porter

We were saddened to hear the news from Pedigree Consultants client Kingwood Stud that popular racemare Golden Silca, a result of a mating we had recommended, died from foaling complications along with her Lawman colt.

The flashy chestnut daughter of Inchinor was trained by Mick Channon to win eight of her 44 races, including the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes and a Gr.2 at Baden-Baden as a two-year-old, and the Gr.3 Desmond Stakes at four. These, along with her ten placings, which included the Gr.1 Prix Morny, Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Falmouth Stakes, contributed to her earnings of just over £500,000.  Before her untimely death she had produced four foals, including the dual winning Dubai Destination filly Silca Destination and an unnamed two-year-old filly by Shamardal, bought for 170,000gns by John Gosden at Tattersalls last year

NOTES FROM NAD AL SHEBA

Alan Porter

On paper, the Dubai World Cup (gr. I) looked a open contest, but it turned out to be a one horse race, as Well Armed (by Tiznow) romped by 14 lengths. Bred in Kentucky, by Winstar – who enjoyed an excellent day with three Taylor Made/Winstar sires being represented by major winners on the card – Well Armed has also a lot to thank Florida for. His great-grandsire, In Reality was a Florida-bred and stood in that state for most of his career, and the female line has long been nurtured in the Sunshine State. The third dam, Tri Argo, a stakes winning daughter of Tri Jet (and a sister to the speedy Triocala), is granddam of another international star in twice Japanese Horse of the Year, Symboli Kris S. Well Armed’s granddam, Trithenia (by the Seattle Slew horse, Gold Meridian), didn’t win, but is a sister to Symboli Kris S’s dam, the graded winner Tee Kay. Well Armed’s dam, Well Dressed, is a daughter of Florida stalwart, Notebook, and is also dam of the Travers Stakes (gr. I) third Helsinki. click here to read more….

THE BEST OF THE THREE

Alan Porter

Back in late 2002 we had an order for a stallion prospect for New Zealand. The order went unfulfilled (the client had expensive taste but a lack of funds to satisfy it) over the next year, but we were reminded by a result on the weekend how close things are in this game.

The first prospect that we sent to our client was Kitalpha. A son of Mr. Prospector, Kitalpha was an unraced full brother to Kingmambo who obviously had appeal from a commercial aspect despite his lack of race form. Unfortunately we were beaten out on this horse by a syndicate headed by John Harris which saw the horse stand in Zimbabwe. click here to read more….
