Storm Cat’s well-bred son, Bernstein made a very good start to his career. From a first crop sired when he stood at Doug Arnold’s Buck Pond Farm, Bernstein was represented by just 37 foals, of which 32 have started and 26 have won. Five of these captured stakes events, their number being headed by the Astarita Stakes (gr. III) victress Toll Taker; the Providencia Stakes (gr. III) winner, Berbatim; and Rugula, a stakes winner who also ran second in the Fantasy Stakes (gr. II). Bernstein had only 29 foals from his second year at stud, 43 in his third, and 47 in his fourth, but has added two stakes winners apiece from each of those crops.

We happened to be studying a Saint Ballado mare the other day, and noticed that to date, the only two graded stakes winners out of mares by that stallion are Saint Afleet (TrueNicks A), who took the Palos Verdes Handicap (gr. II) and this year’s Futurity (gr. II) winner, Charitable Man (TrueNicks B). Saint Afleet is a son of Northern Afleet and Charitable Man is by Lemon Drop Kid, and there is an interesting pedigree connection here. Northern Afleet is a by a son of Mr. Prospector out of a mare by Nureyev, and Lemon Drop Kid is by Kingmambo, a son of Mr. Prospector out of a mare by Nureyev. So both of the graded stakes winners out of Saint Ballado mares are by stallions that have a Mr. Prospector/Nureyev cross. To add to the “coincidence’ we can note that Northern Afleet also has a 2008 stakes winner out of mare by Devil’s Bag, the brother to Saint Ballado. click here to read more….

Given that he never raced at two, Pulpit would seem to be an unlikely influence for precocity, but we are noting that seems to be a trait associated with his stallion sons. A few weeks ago, we mentioned his son, Stroll, a middle-distance turf horse, who already has three two-year-old stakes winners from his first crop.

Congratulations to Joanne Nielsen, breeder of Rollers, who defeated a strong field of three-year-old sprinters to capture the $250,000 Gallant Bob Handicap over six furlongs at Philadelphia Park.
The result of a mating planned by Alan Porter Pedigree Research, Rollers is by Stormy Atlantic out of the Distinctive Pro mare Elise’. Rollers realized $60,000 as a yearling at the Saratoga New York-bred sale and was resold for $500,000 as a two-year-old in training. He has now won 4 races and earned $291,450 for his owners, Lael Stable. The mating was a particularly interesting one for Porter as he recalls travelling Rollers’ third dam, Cheddar Pink, then a yearling from Newmarket to the yard of Barry Hills, back in 1974.

Bred by Tony Holmes (Marula Park Stud) and Dr. Walter Zent, Zanjero captured the Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II) to take his earnings to $1,620,786. click here to read more….
